SORENSTAM, CREAMER, WIE HEADLINE SAMSUNG WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD
20-player field to battle Oct. 10-16 at BIGHORN Golf Club
Palm Desert, CA. – Defending champion Annika Sorenstam, fellow major champions Jeong Jang and Birdie Kim, LPGA Rookie of the Year Paula Creamer, Solheim Cup standout Natalie Gulbis and 15-year-old amateur sensation Michelle Wie are in the field for the Samsung World Championship, Oct. 10-16, at the Canyons Course at BIGHORN Golf Club.
Other stars who have qualified for the elite, 20-player field scheduled to play in the 25th staging of the championship include Cristie Kerr, Wendy Ward, Pat Hurst and Rosie Jones, teammates of Creamer and Gulbis on the victorious U.S. Solheim Cup team, as well as Lorena Ochoa, Meena Lee, Candie Kung, Gloria Park, Marisa Baena, Lorie Kane, Heather Bowie and Catriona Matthew, all based on the 2005 LPGA money list. With Denmark's Iben Tinning declining an invitation due to the impending birth of her child, Sweden's Sophie Gustafson qualified as the leader of the Ladies European Tour Order of Merit. Grace Park gained entry as the 2004 Vare Trophy winner. Sorenstam is a four-time champion (1995, 1996, 2002, 2004), Jones won in 1988 and Gustafson in 2003.
Sorenstam qualified in four categories: defending champion, winning the first two majors of 2005 -- the Kraft Nabisco Championship and the McDonald's LPGA Championship -- and leading the 2004 Official ADT Money List. Kim is the U.S. Women's Open champion and Jang won the Weetabix Womens' British Open. Wie accepted a Championship Selection Committee invitation.
The Samsung World Championship, a 72-hole stroke play event, has been contested on five continents in 24 years. The field returns to the Canyons Course at BIGHORN Golf Club for a shot at the $212,500 first prize out of a purse of $850,000.
Tickets can be purchased by calling the Samsung World Championship office toll free at 1-888-345-LPGA (5742).
